Timing guide

How Long to Bake Chicken Breast at 400°F

A practical timing guide for baking boneless chicken breast at 400°F, with the doneness cue that matters more than the clock.

The short answer

At 400°F (200°C), boneless, skinless chicken breasts usually take about 20 to 25 minutes. Thin cutlets can be done in 12 to 15 minutes, while large breasts over 8 ounces may need closer to 28 to 30.

Time is only a guide because breasts vary so much in size. The finished internal temperature is what actually tells you it is safe and juicy: 165°F at the thickest point.

  • Thin cutlets (1/2 inch): about 12–15 minutes.
  • Average breast (6–8 oz): about 20–25 minutes.
  • Large breast (8 oz+): about 26–30 minutes.

How to keep it juicy at 400°F

Pound the breasts to an even thickness so they cook at the same rate, then pat dry, rub with a little oil, and season. The oil helps the surface brown and holds the seasoning in place.

Start checking a few minutes before the low end of the range. Pull the chicken at 165°F and rest it five minutes; the temperature evens out and the juices settle back into the meat.
